ESP-Systems Power Conditioning Systems
Q: What is ESP-Systems?
A: ESP-Systems is an energy saving, power conditioning system. It saves energy with guaranteed paybacks of 2½ to 3½ years while mitigating surges and harmonics, stabilizing voltage, and protecting equipment and machinery.
The ESP-Systems System is comprised of components which include: Inductors, Reactors, Capacitors, Resistors, Filters, Contactors, Fuses and other electrical components. It utilizes advanced microprocessor regulators capable of monitoring and controlling 24/7. The unique features of the ESP-Systems System are achieved by the design of the system and its Ladder Logic response, a thorough understanding of magnetization and impedance and the role they play in today’s power.
Q: What does the system do?
A: ESP-Systems provide the following Features and Benefits to an electrical distribution:
STANDARD FEATURES
-
Improves and stabilizes voltage supplied to the load, thereby minimizing heat generation. This results in energy savings, improved prodution and increased equipment efficiency and longevity.
-
Reduces phase current and balances the load over the three phases based on X/R and Z, reducing negative voltage sequences and circulating currents, resulting in reduced equipment maintenance and failure.
-
Shields against an infinite number of surges, transients, and spikes, thereby protecting your investment in the plant and equipment while saving money.
-
Filters broadband harmonics, resulting in increased equipment longevity while proportionally reducing the effect of harmonics on monthly electric bills. Reduces line, eddy current and hysteresis losses, thereby reducing the kilowatt demand and kilowatt hour consumption.
-
Improves power factor by reducing reactive and apparent power through damped response, increasing system efficiency and eliminating possible related charges while reducing line losses (I²R). Optimizes power factor and requires only a fraction of the standard capacitor banks normally needed, but without any deleterious side effects.
-
Releases distribution’s wasted KVA capacity, thereby allowing additional loads without requiring over sizing of the transformer or electrical switchgear.
-
Brownout protection maintains and increases voltage over that supplied by the transformer during temporary low line voltage.
-
Intermittent supply failure protection supplies continuous voltage during short duration intermittent supply failure and line switching.
-
Harmonic mitigation – mitigates specific and multiple harmonics such as third, fifth, seventh…to a non-destructive level, resulting in energy savings, improved production and increased equipment efficiency and longevity.
Q: How does the ESP-System reduce KWD and KWH?
A: The utility meter reads the highest phase reading or area under the curve and identifies all the energy under the curve. The ESP-Systems reduce KW Demand and KWH through the following:
-
Stabilizing and improving voltage, thereby increasing system efficiency and reducing the running temperature of the load.
-
Balancing the three phases based on X/R, thereby reducing negative voltage sequence and circulating currents while improving system efficiency.
-
Filtering surges and transients plus mitigating broadband harmonics, thereby reducing the true RMS component of power.
-
Reducing line, eddy current and hysteresis losses, thereby increasing system efficiency.
-
Improving power factor, thereby increasing system efficiency while reducing distribution losses and eliminating penalties without the deleterious side effects which are normally associated with unregulated capacitance.
Q: If anything happens to the ESP-System, will we lose operation time?
A: No. Provisions are taken so that it would be almost impossible for the ESP-Systems to fail completely or jeopardize the plant’s operation because of parallel installation(s) both internally and externally. Should there be a failure of the ESP-System, it is designed to isolate itself immediately from the electrical system.
Q: What savings will ESP-Systems provide?
A: ESP-Systems can deliver tangible power savings of typically , but not limited to, 6% to 12% of the existing electric utilitycosts without reducing any existing load. Furthermore, savings resulting from the eliminiation of down time and equipment failure, reduction of maintenance expenses and elimination of penalty charges due to poor power factor are all just some of the guaranteed cost reductions.
Q: Do you guarantee the savings?
A: Yes we do. If all matters remain as they were at the time of measurement and design and based on conditions addressed in “Verification of ESP-Systems Savings”, we guarantee the savings indicated or we will pay you the difference.
Q: How much does the ESP-Systems cost?
A: Historically the payback period is typically 2½ to 3½ years. Since ESP-Systems are custom designed for each client, with their own savings profile, a final quotation/price can only be made after a measurement and analysis of a facility’s load characteristics. However, when “Intangible Savings” are considered, the paybacks can be in a few short months, but only “Tangible Savings” are considered in calculating ROI.
Q: What are the payment terms?
A: For orders within the United States and Commonwealths, the terms are 50% down and 50% upon delivery, except when turn-key contracts may alter these terms.
Outside the United States, the terms are 100% prepaid.
Q: Can I make payment in installments?
A: Yes. In our proposal/quotation, a financial overview and leasing overview is attached. We have direct access to funding up to $5 Million dollars per client for qualified customers. We can arrange for a lease/purchase plan that can be worked out and beneficial to both parties with a buyout structured for any one of multiple ways for our customer’s convenience.
Q: Can ESP-Systems work on generators?
A: Yes, as a matter of fact, it will increase and enhance power delivery of the generator so that it can serve more load efficiently and with higher power quality. It will improve the power factor, reduce the cost of maintenance and provide all manner of benefits, such as with a standard power delivery system.
Q: How effictive is ESP-Systems with UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)?
A: UPS systems waste energy rather than save it and many generate harmonics and can be extremely sensitive to surges and transients. Installation of the ESP-Systems in conjunction with UPS will enhance the UPS system operation, while it saves energy.
Q: Will humidity affect the ESP-Systems?
A: It should not, other than normal corrosion and oxidation in case of excessive relative humidity. This technology has been conditioning poewr in facilities throughout the entire world; from Africa to Asia and from Europe to South America for decades. It is very hearty and in some cases can operate for many years without repair or upgrade.
Q: If we have more than one transformer/main panel board, how many ESP-Systems do we need?
A: Typically one ESP-System is required for each transformer/main panel switchboard. However, exact breakdown and number of units will be determined following the Link Analysis to ensure ESP-Systems’ performance and effectiveness. Moreover, you need not require ESP-Systems for some of your transformer/main panel switchboards if their saving profiles are not economical for you to install it and no anomalies eminating from that area warrant equipment there.
Q: Will the ESP-Systems cause tripping of my plant after installation?
A: This has never happened with previous systems, either inside or outside the US. If there is a fault in the ESP-Systems, it cuts itself off, thus isolating itself from the rest of the plant. This is the purpose of modular construction and parallel installation both internally and externally, in order to gain the benefit, while isolating potential failures from the circuit.
Q: What kind of loads can benefit from the ESP-Systems features?
A: All kinds of loads and any three-phase facility can benefit from our system. This includes capacitive, inductive, and resistive loads. We don’t care if you manufacture widgets or submarines – if you have a highrise or a steel foundry, ESP conditions three-phase power regardless of size, voltage or location.
Q: Can the ESP-Systems be used in large applications which consume power in the range of 10MW and above?
A: Yes. This is because ESP-Systems is custom-designed to match each individual load regardless of size or location.
Q: Does ESP-Systems combat distortion coming in from the primary side of the transformer?
A: Yes.
Q: Does the ESP-Systems consume power?
A: Very little energy is used when ESP-Systems are turned on, as most of the components are passive.
Q: Can the ESP-Systems be used for power generating stations?
A: Yes, often to greater benefit. The cost of maintenance and operations for onsite generation can be affected greatly.
Q: What is the smallest size of the ESP-Systems that is available?
A: Subject to economy of scale, the smallest size can cater for a load drawing 100 Amps.
Q: Do I need an individual unit for each SCR control motor?
A: Not necessarily.
Q: Can I buy one or two ESP-Systems, even though I have five transformers in my facility?
A: Yes, you can buy ESP-Systems individually for each transformer or in one complete system as proposed by us. However, as with most things, it is always more economical to do it all at once.
Q: Why are the ESP-Systems designed based on the measured load and not the transformer’s maximum load?
A: ESP-Systems are designed and manufactured based on measured load to ensure optimum savings, quality of power and other benefits. Also, it is more cost effective to size the system based on the load, as opposed to the treating the capacity.
